Acupuncture Q & A

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a classic Chinese protocol for relieving pain and invigorating your body’s innate healing properties. Your specially trained provider at Artius Integrative Medicine inserts ultrathin needles into specific target points all over your body to alleviate stress, pain, and a host of other symptoms associated with acute and chronic conditions.

Acupuncture is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine, which seeks to unblock obstructions in your energy flow along what are known as meridians, or energy channels. Needling your acupuncture points frees your energy and restores life and function to your body.

What is medical acupuncture?

Medical acupuncture is the term used for acupuncture that’s performed by a doctor who has specialty training in the healing modality. Your doctor at Artius Integrative Medicine is educated, trained, and licensed in Western medicine as well as in therapeutic acupuncture.

When your doctor uses acupuncture to complement your treatment, the focus is on:

  • Prevention of illnesses and disease
  • Treatment of existing conditions

Medical acupuncture means your doctor can operate back and forth between both forms of treatment or combine the two when beneficial.

What conditions improve with acupuncture?

If you suffer from any of the following conditions, you are a candidate for acupuncture:

  • Arthritis
  • Allergies
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Migraines
  • Back pain
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Tennis elbow
  • Neck pain
  • Joint pain
  • Spinal problems
  • Dental pain
  • Constipation
  • Respiratory problems

Acupuncture is also useful to relieve the aches and pains that are common in pregnancy. For customized treatment, talk to your doctor about your unique needs.

What happens during an acupuncture appointment?

During your initial consultation, the Artius team reviews your health history, family background, and concerns. Based on your condition, the team may recommend one or two acupuncture sessions per week until you improve.

During each session, you relax in a comfortable private room while your provider strategically inserts the ultrathin, flexible needles. You may feel a pinch or a twinge or brief pain, but it’s well tolerated by most patients. The needles are left in position for about 15 minutes before your doctor removes them from your skin.

When you’re ready to pursue a time-tested healing therapy, call Artius Integrative or use the online scheduling option.
